This newest Wagon Repair is a real treat, with label head Mathew Jonson collaborating with Stockholm’s Adam Beyer, who also lends his remixing talents to Mat’s signature track ‘Marionette’ on the flip side. With ‘Big Dipper’ the sum is arguably even greater than it’s parts. Adam’s pounding percussion is distinctively present, with Mat’s acute ability to develop suspense eminent throughout. Throbbing synth melodies ebb over unrelenting drum patterns, mutating in pitch around a needling static bass and a dissonant lead melody. Surveillant pads loom above the mix, isolating and overpowering elements as the drums grow in stature to climax. Adam Beyer’s interpretation of ‘Marionette’ is a crunchy number, strutting with eerie resonant keys and tight, thudded percussion around the original’s distinctive undulating lead melody.

Wow… we’re expecting big things of this release. Just take a glance at the artists involved and you’ll no doubt feel the same. Matthew Dear, Carl Craig, Kelley Polar, Au Revoir Simone, Susumu Yokota, Emperor Machine and more besides all cover David Bowie’s numerous works in their own style. And the results are strong, leftfield, outre covers and reimaginations of some of the best pop tracks of the last 30 years. Stunning.
