A product of an intense artistic exchange between Parisian producer DJ Yellow and
New Yorker Astrid Suryanto, ‘The Intermission’ catalogues a story of burning desire
and accursed love.
The concept was clear from day one. The duo would write a love letter, and sculpt an
album from its contents. Within the letter was a tale of a character so tormented by the
possibility of her relationship losing colour that she decided to leave, eternally
preserving it’s resonance but tragically separating the star-crossed couple.
This bitter-sweet contrast of beauty and melancholy is ever present in ‘Intermission’,
with Astrid Suryanto’s soaring vocals adding shades of light and dark to DJ Yellow’s
blend of cold metallic techno and uplifting electronic pop.
Tracks like ‘In Your Voice’, ‘Light On Me’ and ‘To The Top’ are saturated with ethereal
pads and epic vocal harmony, yet animated by a jagged, buzzed synth and deep bass
pound that maintains the balance between warm and cold.
Not every track is shrouded in such conflict however, with cuts like ‘Night In’ and ‘You
Are’ moving into the realms of electronic pop, with technically complex rhythms
lightened by optimistic bass and a warm, ambient vocal tone.
Together, DJ Yellow and Astrid Suryanto have crafted an enchanting album that
approaches with intimate lyricism, moves with whirlwind euphoria and leaves behind a
resonant ember.
